EXCLUSIVE: Sudeep Nagarkar Talking about his new Book. An Interview.

This man needs no introduction. He has touched many hearts with his power of portraying the emotions at its best. With Aditya and Riya, he becomes the reason to make people believe the true meaning of Love. He has sold over 50 Thousand copies and still he is top on the charts. We are talking about none other than "Sudeep Nagarkar"

Before Interview, Firstly Team Purple Pen would love to congratulate him for the third book "It Started with a friend request"

Ques: You started with ‘Few Things Left Unsaid’ and now it’s ‘It started with a friend request’. How has the journey as a writer been so far?
A: It was not easy like any debut author. I think what worked for me was I never got involved in any group-ism or never tried any cheap publicity stunts through fake reviews on flipkart or Facebook. You can still see negative reviews too on my sites. It could also be because I never thought to become bestseller like other debut authors who are desperate to be one and play tricks. I have always tried to be one from the crowd. My readers/fans treat me as a family and we share a bonding that no one could break. I faced hard core criticism too but I think that is a part of this small industry. “Few things left unsaid” released in 2011 and it struck the right chords with the readers and still continues to be in top 20 books of Nielsen list. Same is the case with “That’s the way we met” and I am hoping the best for “It started with a friend request”

Ques: How did you come up with the title of your Third Book?
A: You better don’t ask thatJ!! I had shortlisted more than 25 titles which I could probably use now for the next 5 years. It was tough to decide on one. I have always believed in keeping a title which goes according to the theme. Finally after discussion with my publishers we stuck to “It started with a friend request” which is the base of script. I would also like to clear the book is not on Facebook request :-)

Ques: Your first book sold over 50k copies, what according to you is the secret recipe behind a novel’s success?
A: Aah! It hurts when I see this figure as we all know it’s much more than the quoted one. No I am not talking about piracy, but about the manipulations done by some publishers in sales. Anyways, if you ask me secret behind it, I will again sum it up in one line i.e ‘If you are genuine to yourself, then there is no fear.’

Ques: What can the readers expect from ‘It started with a friend request’?
A: Not a casual love story. It will take every emotion to one step higher. Be it romance, humour or friendship. I believe the characters are very real as it is inspired from real life story of my friends Akash and Aleesha. Their chemistry in real life is as like any other couple. It’s not a perfect romantic saga but a story which is happening around you. It will show that if you have a true friend when you are emotionally unstable then it really lifts your confidence. If you love someone truly and are meant to be together then even the maker can’t separate you. Moreover, the incidents occurred in the book are around 2011 and 2012 when I had already penned down my 1st book. Aditya plays a important role in the book and I promise that my readers/fans will have a smile when they close the book after enjoying the ride of life.

Ques: Is there any message you would like to give through your novel?
A:  There is no one message as such but the strong message that is conveyed is value friendship and value relations till they exist. We generally realize importance of even the smallest thing when it’s lost or not with us. The other important message is ‘Say no to drugs and obsession’. It can lead you to destruction.

Ques: Did you always want to be an author or the love you lost made you one?
A: I think the later one holds true. I never wanted to be an engineer but climbing a wrong ladder brought the best out of me. Now it feels better to sale your books rather than selling a product for some xyz company. :-)

Ques: What are your views on the present Indian Literary market?
A: It’s nice to see more and more readers getting involved and developing the habit of reading. Only a few publishers are creating a mess for some extra money by printing almost everything that comes their way which makes readers think twice before picking up debut author books from the shelves. But overall, the scenario is pleasing. 5 years back no one would have thought lakhs of copies getting sold in Indian market but now writing can seriously be taken as a full time career.

Ques: Why did you dislike engineering as a kid? What did you actually thought it was? Some rut that one should not get into? Wrong Perception or what?
A: There is no strong reason as such but just that I wanted to pursue Bmm and not engineering. Rather, more than half of engineers dislike engineering unless you are getting a handsome package.

Ques: Do you believe in Public display of love, as you have portrayed you love nationwide?
A: It depends person to person. But yes, current generation is very open minded and don’t mind it.

Ques: Did Love lose made you Curmudgeon or made you close to your friends?
A: It made me realize the importance of any person in your life and how much of them you want in your life.

Ques: What role does the publisher play in a novel’s success? How has your experience been with the two publishing houses you’ve been associated with?
A:  Not everyone enters writing industry with a silver spoon in their mouth. Even I had to struggle to sustain and it feels nice to see my both books today in top 20 books in Fiction genre. “That’s the way we met” even became one of the best books of 2012. I personally believe publishers play an important role in giving visibility to an author and his books. Golden rule says ‘Where there is demand, there has to be supply else you lose the market.’ If a publisher fails to make your book available in time and does not provide your book great visibility in book stores then even the best script may not sell. I am quite happy with Random House and would love to work with them in future too. The atmosphere is very friendly and professional too unlike my earlier publishers and I think there had been too much debate earlier on this topic.

Ques: Tell us something about your life apart from writing.
A: I think everyone knows it all. For those who don’t or keep me asking about Riya’s comeback, I would like to answer for them. We are not together and it hurts to say that the chapter might be over. I still don’t know the reason for it but I am forced to think in this way with no option left. When there were expectations on one more part of Aditya Riya love story which would conclude their story happily at the same time I didn’t want to fake a story to bank on the previous success. I would have loved to as for me it wouldn’t have been just a story, but my life. But it would have been unfair towards the innocence that the love story had in it. Maybe the maker has something else in store for me. I would like to thank all my readers for supporting me selflessly throughout the journey.

Ques: On a scale of 10, how do you rate yourself?
A: I leave this one for the readers :-)

Ques: Which has been your favorite out of the three novels you’ve written?
A: A mother can’t compare her children. J But I think “It started with a friend request” has  a soft corner in my heart as I realized during the process of writing that it’s easier to write about your own life but extremely tough to pen down your best friends story as you want the best outcome for it. I hope everyone reads and loves it as they loved my previous work.

Ques: And finally, any advice or suggestion you would like to give to aspiring authors and readers?
A: Don’t try to fake or copy someone to get National Bestseller tag under your belt. If you are here to sustain in long run, you need to add your own taste to the dish. Else soon you will be lost in this virtual world of fame. I have seen many cases in front of me in past 2 years since I am familiar to this world. Be true to your work as it reflects in your personality.
